What is the OAT Citizenship and PSHE Education curriculum?
The OAT Citizenship and PSHE Education curriculum has been written to meet and exceed the requirements of the Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) statutory guidance and the National Curriculum for Citizenship.
The curriculum encompasses four core themes of Citizenship, Careers & Financial and Economic Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education. Lessons utilise resources from the Association for Citizenship Teaching, PSHE Association and other reputable charities and organisations, alongside high-quality, bespoke resources developed specifically for the curriculum.
How does the curriculum work?
A curriculum for subjects such as Citizenship and PSHE can never truly be finished, as the subject matter is ever-evolving. Equally, a curriculum incorporating this content needs to be carefully tailored to the contextual needs of the individual academy.
This curriculum is designed to support academies by providing a high-quality base which subject leaders and individual teachers can adapt and amend as needed; although most lessons can be taught ‘as-is’, the greatest impact will come from tailoring the included content and adding local data to highlight the relevance of the topics to pupils.
The sequencing of the curriculum has been designed as spiral, with close attention paid to the arrangement of units within a year level to encourage a natural flow from one topic to another, as far as is possible. Each lesson has been developed by OAT Lead Practitioners, based on their own teaching experiences and practices.

What does each unit include?
Each unit consists of slide decks, worksheets and handouts, a teacher guide, an ipsative assessment and a signposting summary poster; some units in Key Stage 3 also include task-based assessments and associated materials. All OAT-produced resources are colour-coded to reflect the relevant theme within which the content sits; this is determined based on the content of the overarching unit, as some subject matter relates to more than one theme.
Some of the featured resources which have been developed by other organisations sit behind a paywall or require membership for access; units with such resources include a summary document which describes the specific resources and links to the access point for these resources. If you find a resource on the site which has not been appropriately credited to the creator, please get in touch so we can rectify this.
